How Safe is Your Home?
Every year, more than 95,000 people die in accidents. A good deal of these deaths
and many of the 9,000,000 disabling injuries caused by accidents can be easily
prevented through awareness and the removal of common safety hazards around the
home. The following home safety check list will help you track down any household
dangers.
Personal Home Safety Check List:
- My family and I have planned an escape route in case of a fire and regularly
practice using it.
- I have recently installed and/or checked my smoke alarm.
- I have stored any gasoline or kerosene in a safe location and container.
- All worn or frayed cords have been replaced with new UL approved cords.
- All electrical outlets are cleared of excessive plugs.
- I have easy access to the baking soda and pot lids near my stove.
- My fireplace is equipped with a screen and spark arrester.
- I have written the gas company's phone number on my emergency list in case of
a gas leak.
- I have cleared a two foot area around my floor heater.
- I have posted a first aid chart in a convenient location.
- All possibly poisonous substances are out of reach of my children and all
cabinet doors that contain such dangers are locked.
- I have listed the phone number of the Regional Poison Center on my Emergency
Phone Guide.
